Despite the Economy,
Our Donors Remain Generous

Many people depend upon the food pantry at Catholic Charities on Mechanic Street in Leominster. Clinical supervisor Jacqueline Tocci Hager, LCSW, LMFT reminds them this pantry is stocked by local Catholics. The food is initially collected in the parishes. The people who attend these parishes also give to the annual Partners in Charity drive, which, in turn, supports Catholic Charities. "They understand how important the donor is, the value of the donor and how the donor can make a difference in our community," said Mrs. Hager. "We are absolutely, incredibly supported by the parishes in the best way they can," she noted.Catholic Charities Thrift Shop

Mrs. Hager said this outpouring of generosity comes at a time when donors themselves are stressed. Everyone feels the effects of the economy and spiraling food and energy costs. Some donors have serious health problems. Others grapple with a myriad of other challenges. "Even the donors are having hard times," she added. "It's scary."

Mrs. Hager said she is overwhelmed that people can share so much, despite their own difficulties and sometimes limited resources. This year's theme for the Partners in Charity campaign is "Open Wide the Doors to Christ ." Mrs. Hager said this very aptly reflects the mission of Catholic Charities. The doors are always open, to whoever needs assistance.

She recalled two recent cases, where people from all walks of life were helped by the generosity of strangers. (Some details are changed to protect privacy.) One foreign-born woman of another faith came to the Leominster office, greatly distressed and ashamed that she couldn't provide for her family. She was welcomed here without reservation and reminded that there are people who are more interested in supplying you with the courage to move forward, and through the donors these moments are possible," Mrs. Hager related.

Another person was so burdened they broke down in tears. But the mood soon shifted to laughter, once it became clear that Catholic Charities is a place of ongoing help and support. "You made me laugh," the person told Mrs. Hager.

Mrs. Hager stressed those in need of assistance are not just given food, clothing and other material goods. They're also offered a comprehensive program that includes lessons in money management, life skills training and group counseling to help adjust to change and loss. "We never give the impression that this is a one-stop thing," she said.
